NEW LIFE
The new birth experience is expressed in many ways by persons of diverging convictions and walks of life. During the twenties and thirties, tent evangelists referred to it as “walking the sawdust trail.” The last decade saw a revival of the expression “born again,” to the extent that it even became fashionable to make such a claim. But none who have truly experienced the new birth would dare to take it so lightly. Billy Graham speaks of making a commitment or a decision for Christ. Children undergoing confirmation classes are encouraged to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Some denominations refer to the act of regeneration as simply “being saved.” Despite the differences in semantics, inherent in all of these thoughts is the concept of change, of renewal, of old things becoming new, of turning away from destructive habits and lifestyles and embracing that which is Christlike.
