PARENTAL GOALS I
‘ve just finished reading the delightful autobiography of Beverly Sills. It is full of fascinating and entertaining stories of her life from childhood up until recent days. She shares many stories of her colorful childhood in New York: Saturdays were special too. On Saturdays my father took Sidney and Stanley to a baseball game or to the Turkish baths and then to a wonderful Rumanian restaurant named Mechel’s that specialized in charcoal broiled steaks. Mama and I, however, spent the day in “New York?” which is how Brooklyn kids refer to Manhattan. I think my mother correctly sensed that if there was enough money to educate her children, my father would see to it that the boys would go to college, and if there was anything left over for me, fine; if not, that would also be fine – maybe I could win a scholarship.
