CONQUER THROUGH FRIENDSHIP
Abdel Kader led a holy war against the French in Algeria for 24 years. Captured in 1847, he was imprisoned in France then exiled to Turkey and later to Syria. There, in 1860, he was responsible for saving 12,000 Christians, including the French officials from being massacred by the Turks. In return, the French honored him with the Legion of Honor. His body was returned to Algeria in 1966 and placed in the Mosque of Constantine. It has now become a national shrine to a man who failed in war but conquered through friendship.
