The company had a new president and it was his opportunity to gather the employees together and give them both a pep talk and also announce some of the important changes that were just around the corner. He told them about new advances in high tech automation, how they were soon going to have a number of robotic machines that would eliminate much of the boring and mindless kinds of work many of them had to do. But he was trying to also reassure them that though the company was moving into a more automated future, they shouldn’t worry, no one was going to be laid off. Natural attrition, retirements, etc. would take care of some of the reduction in work force. In fact, they were going to profit as well from this automation. Since there would be less need for there work they would increasingly be given additional time off — without a cut in pay. In fact, in time…
