Prayer

The legendary Jenny Lind, who toured the United States more than a century ago, was known as the “Swedish Nightingale.” Music experts of her time marvelled at her rich, warm, colorful voice and her remarkable control, which was considered unique. Whenever she arranged to give a concert she requested that she be provided with a little room backstage, available only to her, in addition to the normal dressing room. A short time before she was to go on stage, she would go into this little room alone and lock the door. Then, she would stand in the center of the room, completely alone, in an attitude of silent prayer and meditation. After a few moments, she would sing one note – – just one note, clear and pure and beautiful. She would stand silently as the reverberations died away, then a few more moments of silence and she would pray: “Oh Lord, let me ring true tonight, let me ring true!”
