‘m sure some of you remember the famous Sol Hurok, the impressario. He brought many of the great musical performers from Europe to America a few years back. In our days the rock scene has Bill Graham of The Rolling Stones fame and a whole world of PR flacks. Many pastors are at heart stagers of media events. They try to have something “playing” each Sunday at church that will bring in the crowds — from the converted cannibal chief to the reformed gangster. Just look once more at the church page on Saturday. Jesus was great at gathering a crowd — he used miracles, healings, raisings of the dead. And the people buzzed. Thinking about this I got the crazy idea that maybe he could have done even better if he had one of our twentieth century PR Flacks working for him. With apologies to Bob Newhart I envisioned a telephone call from Sol, the advance man who is calling…
