In the Garden of Eden story, all Adam and Eve had to do to stay in Paradise was let God be God. It is the one thing they would not do, and it is the one thing we will not do–it is the original sin in the life of all of us. We will not let God be God. God said to Adam and Eve, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it lest you die” (Gen. 3:3). But the serpent said to Eve, “You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God.” So Eve “took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband and he ate” (Gen. 3:4-6). And they were estranged from God.
