In the study of Ancient History, we learn of the conflict between the Medes and the Persians. The Medes tried to take the Empire away from the Persians and when they failed, most of their leaders turned away from politics and the military and became the preeminent scholars of the Middle East. Studying and searching in the fields of science and philosophy became a style of life with them. Consequently, they were often called the “Wise Men.” They kept using their minds, they kept looking for new knowledge, they kept searching for truth. And, as we know in the Christmas Story, to them there appeared a star. The star was there for everyone to see, but it was only to those who were searching for truth that the meaning was made known — and therefore Christ came to them. I want to remind you, therefore, of something we tend to forget: that this lifestyle of searching, looking, reaching out, is one of the strong traditions…
