It is noteworthy that Jesus hardly is ever by Himself in the Gospel records. He is with the crowds. He is with His disciples. He is with people. He is with Mary or Martha or Nicodemus or Zacchaeus or the woman at the well. In a more intimate way, He is with Peter, James and John. Even when He withdraws from the crowds for periods of intense prayer, He takes these closest friends along with Him. Recall how they are with Him on the Mount of Transfiguration and in the Garden at Gethsemane. He wants their support in these times of crisis and decision.
God’s greatest gifts are given to us not when we are alone but when we are together. “Where two or three are gathered in My Name, there am I in their midst,” Jesus said (Mt.18:20). “Two or three” is a Greek idiom. It does not mean two or three literally. It means more than one. It might be two or…
