If I knew you and you knew me —
If both of us could clearly see,
And with an inner sight divine
the meaning of your heart and mine —
I’m sure that we should differ less
and clasp our hands in friendliness —
Our thoughts would pleasantly agree,
If I knew you and you knew me.1

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were to discover some magic way for human beings to really get to know each other? Wouldn’t it do wonders for humanity’s collective peace of mind, as well as for our individual peace of mind? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were to discover some solid area of agreement about one another’s humanity that would make the act of clasping our hands in friendliness irresistible?
