However we wish to define the devil, we know deep in our heart that there is something trying to pull us away from the first priority in our life, namely, to be in union with God the Father in and through the Lord Jesus Christ. When we allow ourselves to be separated from the genuine Source of our life’s fulfillment, we find ourselves trusting our life to other gods. And we come to Church and we talk about God and we sing about God, but money is our god and things are our god and mindless pleasure is our god. Sooner or later this estrangement from God affects our health, affects our relationships, affects our ability to love. We become anxious and our anxiety robs us of our sleep and robs our life of its joy. It drains our energy and vitality, and even contributes to many forms of illness.
