Ammon Hennacy was a farmer in Arizona. He was also a practicing non-conformist who was deeply committed to absolute pacifism. He went so far as to refuse to pay his taxes because, he said, “Some of that money would be used to make guns for people to fight with.” Every April 15, he picketed the Internal Revenue Service office in Phoenix. On one such occasion, a friend spoke to him on the steps of the IRS building. “Ammon, why don’t you cease and desist this foolish practice? You can’t change the world this way.” To which Ammon replied, “Who’s trying to change the world? I’m just trying to keep the world from changing me!”
