A college speech professor detested the way speakers tend to repeat points in order to emphasize them. On one occasion, he said to his class, “Ladies and gentlemen, never repeat for emphasis.” Then he pounded the lectern and said, “Let me say that again: Never repeat for emphasis.”
In today’s Gospel Lesson, it seems clear that, among other things, Jesus is repeating for emphasis. Not once, not twice, but three times He asks the Apostle Peter, “Do you love Me? … Do you love Me? … Do you love Me?” To which Peter immediately responds, “Yes Lord, You know I love You” … “Yes Lord, You know I love You” … “Lord, You know everything; You know I love You” (Jn. 21:15-17).
Notice, however, that the conversation doesn’t end on that note. Each time Peter professes his love for the Lord, Jesus responds with a call to action: “Feed My lambs!” … “Look after My sheep!” … “Feed My sheep!” And, in so doing, Jesus…
