The same man who wrote the Gospel of John also wrote a letter. In the letter he summarizes in a single phrase the basic principal of the whole Biblical Message: “God is Love” (1 Jn. 4:8). The simple truth of the tremendous reality that God loves us and is for us is what gives meaning to every area of our human existence. But the New Testament doesn’t present this Good News to us as an abstract generality. The same man who gave us the phrase, “God is Love,” wrote a Gospel that tells us that this Love of God has become flesh to dwell among us in the Person of Jesus Christ. It is not only that God is Love in some kind of abstract way, but He is Love in one of us; He is Love in Jesus Christ. Or, as the beautiful hymn puts it, “Love came down at Christmas/Love, all lovely/Love Divine.” What this means is that God’s Love identifies with us…
