Christmas is a time for peace and quiet — a time for quiet assurance, quiet trust. That sounds good. After all, the world is filled with noise and confusion and uncertainty. It’s about time we took a break from all the turmoil and trouble. It’s about time we demonstrated some quiet assurance that things aren’t really as bad off as the screaming newspaper headlines and the late night TV news would have us believe.
The mother in a large family was busy in the kitchen preparing an early dinner so that she and her husband would have time to see a movie at the neighborhood theatre. She heard a “click” and she knew that the TV in the next room had been turned off. Then she noticed that the telephone receiver was off the hook. And the stereo sounds coming from the den suddenly stopped. It was then that she realized she hadn’t seen any of her children for several minutes. Five minutes passed…
