Not too long ago, a “stand-up” comic, One famous for his delivery of “one-liner” jokes, celebrated his ninety-first birthday at a party attended by a host of relatives, friends and Media persons. During an interview at the party, the first question asked was “To what do you attribute your longevity?” Without missing a beat, the comic replied, “Breathing!”
No argument there: no breath, no life; no breath, physical death!
In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus answers the question of how we achieve spiritual longevity, so to speak. It is the first Easter Sunday and the Risen Lord appears to His disciples, saying, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent Me, I am sending you.” Then, John tells us, “He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn. 20:21,22).
Jesus, the Bread of Life … Jesus, the Breath of life. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit of God into our souls in order to sustain us spiritually. No argument there, either.
