“Then I saw a new Heaven and a new earth, and the main street of the city was pure gold,” wrote the author of the Book of Revelation. No doubt this verse from the Book of Revelation was the inspiration for the story about a very wealthy man who was terminally ill. From his deathbed he cried out,
“Lord, for years I have labored to acquire all these riches. Surely you will allow me to take at least some of them with me!” To which the Good Lord replied, “I will honor your final request, but you will be limited to one suitcase. Remember, only one suitcase!”
Shortly thereafter, the man arrived at the Pearly Gates carrying one suitcase. “The Lord gave me permission to bring one suitcase with me,” he explained to St. Peter, the Keeper of the Gates. “All right,” Peter replied, “but you’ll have to show me what’s in it.” Whereupon the man opened the suitcase which he had filled with gold.…
