In an “Esquire” magazine article, TV journalist Ted Koppel made some negative comments about modern day heroes:
“We are creating a lot of false idols in this society,” he said. “It troubles me about our society. There have been cultures, and perhaps there still are somewhere in the world, in which philosophers and poets and great teachers are the stars of their civilization. Look at who the stars of our civilization are.”
We know, of course, that sports figures rank high on the list of household names in our society. And one of the most popular sports figures in modern history was football coach Vince Lombardi. Lombardi was known and respected as a sound strategist, a hard taskmaster, a tough disciplinarian and a perfectionist. But he was idolized by millions most of all because he was a winner.
