From Ireland comes the story of a Roman Catholic nun who ran out of gas and walked to a filling station. The proprietor gave her enough gas to get her car started — in the only small container he had available: an empty beer bottle. The nun returned to the car and was pouring the contents of the beer bottle into the tank when a Protestant Minister drove by. He watched in amazement, then exclaimed, “We may have our differences, Sister, but I’ve got to admire your faith in miracles!”

A mother’s fear that her young son was watching too much television was finally confirmed when she overheard him saying his prayers: “Bless Mommy and Daddy,” the boy began, “and give us this day our slow-baked, oven-fresh, butter-topped, vitamin-enriched bread.”

The story of miracles and bread in today’s Gospel Lesson must have been very important in the life of the early Christians. Except for the crucifixion of Christ, it is the only story…
