“The News” has become something of a fetish in modern society. A few years ago, a labor-management dispute resulted in a strike which closed down all the newspapers in a big city. TV channels and radio stations reported an abrupt rise in the size of their newscast audiences. In the next town, where there was no strike, police reported a rash of street-corner newspaper thefts. It was highly profitable for a thief to steal a bundle or two and sell them in the neighboring news-starved city at premium prices.
