Sermon Week/Year

Third Sunday of Advent, C

In todayís Gospel Episode, John the Baptist is preparing his followers for the imminent coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the spirit of high expectation, therefore, Johnís followers ask, ìWhat must we do then?î and John answers simply and directly: ìIf anyone has two tunics, he must share with the man who has none. And one with something to eat must do the sameî (Lk. 3:11).

Johnís mission was to proclaim the coming Kingdom of God in the person of Jesus Christ ñ the Kingdom of love ñ the Kingdom of caring and sharing.

ìWhat ought we to do?î the people asked John The Baptist. ìWhat ought we to do?î the people asked the Apostle Peter after Jesusí death, resurrection, and ascension into His Fatherís Kingdom. And now, for us Christians, the question is not ìWhat ought we to do?î Rather, it is ìWhen are we going to do it?î We know the Gospel Story. We know the teachings of Christ.
