In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus stands before Pilate who says to Him, “So you are a King then?” Jesus answers, “It is you who say it. Yes I am a King. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth” (Jn. 18:37). Later, after His death and resurrection, the mission of the Gospel writers was to tell the truth about Jesus — to tell the truth about how Jesus carried out His mission to “bear witness to the truth.”
“For this I was born, for this I have come into the world,” Jesus told Pilate. That was the stated purpose of His life. He had a goal for His life, a reason for being, a mission to perform, a work to accomplish.
