In a poem by William Butler Yeats, based on an old Irish story, a man is running “full speed ahead.” He’s running so fast that he is little more than a blur. And as he runs, he tosses aside many of the material things that everyone else is eager to possess. He gets rid of everything that might keep him from reaching the goal he is so furiously pursuing. When asked where he is going, the man replies, “I am running to Paradise.”

In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus is walking in the Temple area. The religious leaders “gather around Him,” John tells us. They’re out to try to get Him again, cross-examine him about His identity. “Who are You and what are You really up to?” they ask, in effect. Jesus replies:

“The works that I do in My Father’s Name, they bear witness to Me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to My sheep. My sheep hear my voice ……
