As the story goes, Satan was having a garage sale. There, arranged on tables, was all his bright, shiny merchandise. On one table, there were some tools to make it easy to tear others down or to use as stepping stones. On another sat some lenses for magnifying one’s importance, which, if you looked through the other end, you could also use to belittle others. Against the wall was the usual assortment of gardening implements guaranteed to help your pride grow, season after season. The rake of scorn, the shovel of jealousy, the tools of gossip and backbiting, selfishness and apathy stood ready for their new owners. All of these were pleasing to the eye and came complete with tempting promises and guarantees of prosperity. Prices, of course, were steep. But don’t worry! Free credit was extended to all buyers. “Take it home, use it, and you won’t have to pay until later!” Satan promised. One visitor noticed two well-worn tools standing in one…
