Rejoice always because the Lord is near

In Hindi culture, the names Sukhi Ram and Dukhi Ram are often used in stories to symbolize contrasting emotions: Sukhi represents happiness, while Dukhi embodies sorrow. The inclusion of “Ram” in their names references the virtuous Lord Rama, regarded as the ideal human being, making these characters apt illustrations for conveying life’s simple truths.

In one such parable, Sukhi Ram is walking along a road when a bird flying overhead unexpectedly releases its droppings, which land on his head. Instead of reacting with anger or frustration, Sukhi smiles, takes out his handkerchief, and calmly wipes his head clean.

Dukhi Ram, watching from nearby, was astonished. “Why are you smiling after that happened to you? Anyone else would be furious.”

Sukhi Ram laughed softly and replied, “I’m just grateful that buffaloes don’t fly.”
