In a popular television show called “Bassmasters,” there is a segment in which viewers are invited to ask questions about sport fishing. During one episode a viewer asked, “How can I become a professional fisherman?” The answer came from one of the show’s experts who answered simply: “spend time on the water.”

In the four Gospels, there are approximately fifty references to the water. Over-and-over again, the Gospel writers describe Jesus’ activities as being on the sea or the seashore. In Matthew’s Gospel alone, there are twenty such references. Here are just a few …
