Connie and Robert, a much-loved couple had just celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Their children and grandchildren gathered for the weekend. So did a gang of longtime neighbors and friends. There were hugs, old stories, and a raucous toast in the backyard—a perfect gathering to mark the occasion.
That night, after the last guests had left and the dishes were done, the couple settled into their familiar routine. As he had done for years, Robert went into the kitchen and made their Sunday night snack: two slices of toast, buttered and topped with jam, and two small glasses of milk. He brought the tray into the living room and called her in to join him.
But when she sat down and saw her plate, Connie’s eyes filled with tears.
Robert looked at her, puzzled. “What’s the matter?”
