In today’s Gospel Lesson, on the Mount of Transfiguration, God’s awesome power and glory was mysteriously revealed in Jesus Christ. And for Simon Peter, who witnessed the revelation, everything suddenly fell into place — or so he thought. He told Jesus, “Master, how good it is for us to be here. Let us set up three shrines, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Peter was saying, in effect, “Let’s stay here. This so much better than the dusty roads of our wanderings, so much better than the hungry crowds and the difficult questions. This is the way religion should be, Master. Everything should be bright, beautiful, and crystal clear! It’s all perfect!” But, as we read on, we can almost hear Jesus saying, not quite yet, Peter.
