What is Life Without God?

In 1675, King Charles II of England attempted to ban coffeehouses, deeming them a threat to public safety. Why? Not because of the drink itself but because of the conversations it inspired. Coffee, he feared, was causing people to overthink — to ask too many questions, to challenge the accepted order. From the beginning, coffee has stirred more than the senses. It wakes us up — sometimes to uncomfortable truths. And perhaps that’s part of what makes it so beloved: it stirs us to attention, not unlike prayer.

A century later, at breakfast one morning, King Louis XV of France, savoring the aroma coming from the royal kitchen, asked, “What is life without coffee?” Then, after a moment’s reflection, he asked, “What is life even with coffee?”
