There is an old legend about Moses and the Hebrew children at the Red Sea. Moses had given the command for the waters to part so that the Hebrews could go through. But the waters did not part. The waters did not part until the first person stepped into the water, in trust and obedience. The waters did not part until the first person began to act out the command.
When the wine runs low in today’s Gospel Story of the Wedding Feast in Cana, Jesus’ mother Mary says to the unhappy servers, “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn. 2:5). And when they do as Jesus commands, water is changed into wine: a miracle of transformation.
God wants you to be a fulfilled person. God wants you to be a happy person. But in order for Him to change your life around, He needs you to act out the command. And that means transforming the crucial question itself from “What can I do to…
