Messiah,

Jesus, the “Resurrection and the Life,” is the Messiah. Jesus is the Christ. Actually, the two words, “Messiah” and “Christ” have exactly the same meaning. Both are titles, “Messiah” from the Hebrew, “Christ” from the Greek. We acknowledge Jesus as Christ, the Messiah. And it comes as something of a surprise to us when we discover in the Bible that Jesus, at times, didn’t want His followers referring to Him in this way.

If you have studied the Gospels at all you are familiar with this problem — called the “Messianic Secret” by Scripture scholars. Peter was the first disciple to acknowledge openly that Jesus was the promised Messiah. “Who do you say that I am?” he was asked. “You are the Messiah,” Peter answered (Mt. 16:15,16). And then came Jesus’ strange reply in which He strictly charged the disciples to tell no one He was the Christ. Why? What is behind this secret?
