In folk-singer Bob Dylan’s words, “The times they are a-changin.'” This theme runs through many of his songs, and it often seems that the changing times are taking us from bad to worse. People are complaining that the world is not only losing its energy, it is losing its mind. Kidnappings, highjackings, assassinations, economic exploitation, massive political corruption: “What’s wrong with us?” people are asking. Almost every conversation, no matter where it starts, seems to end up in this kind of mood. That is why it is so important in these times to remind ourselves that the people of God are a people of joy. We are a people of joy because we know that God never stops giving Himself to us even in our darkest situations; and, as He gives Himself, He gives us joy.

The New Testament is a collection of books of joy. Remember, the word “Gospel” itself means “Good News.” The Gospel begins as the angel of the Lord proclaims…
