DEATH AND FOOD STAMPS
Al Palanza’s brother had been dead for two weeks when a letter arrived at the address of the deceased. Social Services had written to notify him that his food stamps had been discontinued… “…because we received notice that you have passed away. May God bless you. You may reapply if there is a change in your circumstances.” When questioned, the social services director said that the letter was computer-generated and the “God bless you” was added by a case worker who wanted to soften the harshness of the notification. Social Services is working on a more appropriate letter. From Associated Press
