Pride, The Utmost Evil

What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world...?
Scripture

Matthew 16:26
Matthew 16:21-27

Sermon Topic

Pride,

A husband and wife were walking through an arcade on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. The husband dropped a coin in a big scale that not only told his weight, but also printed out a “character reading.” Then he stepped on the scale and the machine produced a ticket which said, “You are the proud possessor of that keen competitive edge that can leave the whole world behind.” The man beamed as he handed his wife the ticket. She read the statement with a smile, and said, “I notice, dear, that they got your weight wrong, too.”

In today’s Gospel Lesson, with just a few magnificently chosen words, Jesus speaks volumes on the subject of foolish pride. “…anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for My sake will find it,” He says. “What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life?” (Mt. 16:25-26).
