MISPLACED VALUES
A child simply underestimates the proper worth of things. A number of years ago, I asked Marci (she was about five then) what she would buy if she had one hundred dollars to spend. She replied, “…a lot of toys, one horse, and one bird.” That was it. That’s the stuff dreams are made of — to a five-year-old child. A little girl once approached her father and said, “Daddy, may I have a nickel?” The father drew out his wallet and, feeling generous, offered her a dollar bill. But the little girl, not knowing what it was, would not take it. “I don’t want that,” she said, “I want a nickel.”
