We are a society of anticipators. We lean into the future, we live for tomorrow, we build up the pension plan and the bank account for tomorrow. We constantly plan for a time when we are “feeling better” or when “the kids leave home” or when “the pressure of the job eases up.” So much that, all too often, the present moment is lost.

If someone were to say, “Name the causes of division and hatred in the world,” we would quickly and easily come up with a long list: greed, jealousy, pride, prejudice, bigotry, self-righteousness, self-centeredness, etc., etc. These are but a few of the names we have for the enemies of peace and brotherhood; for the fences that encircle the human heart and divide person from person, nation from nation. We all are conscious of them. They would appear on just about everybody’s lists. However, there is a more subtle but no less divisive cause that probably would not appear on many…
