Pleroma Of God

Pleroma (p-l-e-r-o-m-a) is not a familiar word to most of us, I am sure. “Pleroma.” It sounds like a name for a perfume or an after-shave lotion. It is neither of those. Pleroma is one of those New Testament words which loses much of its meaning when we try to translate it from the Greek into a single word in English. It is the word St. Paul uses in order to convince people that the Glory of God, the Grace of God, the Love of God, the fullness of God, is present in Jesus Christ. There is no single English word we can use to translate pleroma. The absolute, whole, complete, total fullness, that’s what the word means. But do you notice how I have to pile up English words to say it!
