High on the list of world problems in our day is the “problem” of the Middle East. From time to time we are reminded that events there could suddenly spark into a conflagration that would make the Vietnam War look like a minor disturbance of the peace. But for people who take the Bible seriously, the politics of the Middle East is not ordinary politics. In that part of the world rests not only the cradle of our religious beginnings but also the symbol of our hopes for the future. Speaking particularly about Jerusalem, the late Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote: “She is a city in a state of trance. Here the prophets lived and ceased to live but their exaltation stayed on. Here the trees praise, the streets say grace, and my steps give thanks. The way of Jerusalem is a way of exaltation. She is so much more than what you see.” Christians can wholeheartedly say “Amen” to that.
