If you look up the word “Jezebel” in the Oxford dictionary, you will find that it is a word that can be used to describe “a scheming woman who paints her face too much.” The original Old Testament Jezebel gave rise to this image. She lived some nine hundred years before Jesus. She was the wicked Queen of King Ahab of Israel. The Old Testament writers go out of their way to tell us that Ahab was more wicked than all the other kings who had come before him, and that his greatest act of wickedness was marrying Jezebel.
Jezebel worshipped the “Baal” Gods who were drawing the people away from Yahweh, the one true God of Israel. Jezebel was a fanatic. She set up places of worship and did everything in her power to get people to leave Yahweh and come over to Baal.
