THE NUMBER ONE PRINCIPLE
Calvin and Hobbes are walking in the woods talking one day and Calvin says: “A lot of people don’t have principles, but I do. I’m a highly principled person! I live according to one principle, and I never deviate from it.” Hobbes looks impressed and asks: “What’s your principle?” Calvin says: “Look out for number one.” Isn’t that a sad commentary on life and on our concept of a principled life? What’s even sadder is that many folks live by that very same principle of sef-centeredness. They look out for numero uno and to blazes with everyone else. Christ teaches us differently. We’re called to care for others. From Billy D. Strayhorn, First United Methodist Church, Groesbeck, Texas
