The great State of Texas is known for many things. Not the least of them is the tendency of its citizens to bend the truth a little in order to create the impression that Texas is “Number One” in everything. The story is told of the Texan who asked a visitor, “Did you know that George Washington originally came from Texas?” The visitor replied, “No, I didn’t know that. I thought he came from Virginia. What’s the story?” The Texan replied, “You see, the Washington family originally lived on a ranch in Texas. One day, George cut down his father’s favorite cherry tree. When his father asked who did it, George said, ‘Father, I cannot tell a lie. I did it.’ Whereupon his father said, ‘Any boy who cannot tell a lie cannot be from Texas.’ So they moved to Virginia.'”
