On the final day of his life, it’s been said that the great English novelist Rudyard Kipling was mumbling deliriously on his deathbed. Those at his bedside could not understand what he was struggling to say until one of the nurses leaned over and said, “Mr. Kipling, Mr. Kipling, what is it you want?” Kipling stopped tossing for a moment and replied with the last bit of strength he could muster, “I want God!”
Just as it should be for all of us, Kipling’s deathbed wish was simply to be with God. And that is precisely what Jesus is telling us: wanting God the way a dying man wants Him is not an intellectual exercise. It’s an exercise in faith – an all-consuming hunger for God and His goodness.
