Today’s sermon: The Holy Trinity (A)

A journalism professor-1 writes about the process of verifying information before reporting it as truth – a subject on the minds of many these days. He explains, “Verification is taking something that might be true and nailing it down with facts. In reverse verification, he says, “you take something that’s been nailed down and try to introduce doubt about it.” He warns that “the phenomenon of verification in reverse poses a special problem for journalists. On the one hand, they are supposed to report what people are saying, and they are supposed to bring us the news of controversies, protests, and disagreements. As it’s often said, conflict makes news.

On the other hand, verification is their business. They cannot support themselves or their users if they cannot support that. They are socially useless if they cannot stand up for verification.”
