It is said that our present Age lacks a proper sense of reverence for the awesome mystery of life. Modern man, it is said, has lost the capacity to dwell on the wondrous mystery of a creative order grinding and groaning its way to fulfillment-a fulfillment that transcends all human understanding. Today’s people, it is said, look ahead in terms of economic and financial security, but little else.
The Season of Advent, which begins today, is that time of year when we are invited to look ahead; to dream dreams about the future-the long-range future-of God’s creative order; to plan ahead for the part we must play in the building of God’s Kingdom. Each of us has the responsibility and the power to make real the presence of God in history and in the lives of others. In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus tells us that the fulfillment of this active role in God’s Plan demands our constant attention, our constant vigilance.
