LUTHER’S SACRISTY PRAYER (I
first read this in the sacristy of the 32nd Street Base Chapel in San Diego, California, when I was there officiating at a wedding.) Lord God, Father in Heaven, I am altogether unworthy of the office and service wherein I am to publish Thy glory and nourish and tend this congregation. But since Thou hast appointed me to be a shepherd and to teach Thy Word; and since people also are in need of the teachings and instruction, so be my helper and let Thy holy angel be with me. Let it please Thee through me to accomplish something to Thy glory, and not to mine or to the praise of men; and so bestow upon me of Thy manifest grace and mercy, a right understanding of Thy Word; and far more be pleased that I may also do it.
