During election campaigns, in the minds of many the question always arises, “Are the candidates telling the truth as they see it, or are they merely telling the people what they want to hear?” The story is told of a politician who arrived late for a speaking engagement in unfamiliar territory. Because of his tight schedule he had been unable to first “check out the local scene to see which way the wind was blowing” (as he put it). When he arrived, he was led immediately to the platform to be introduced and begin his speech. He seized upon one of the main issues in the campaign and, using all the political rhetoric at his command, spoke at great length on the subject. Finally, he paused to take a drink of water.
