ASSERTIVENESS IN FUND RAISING
A pandhandler varied his usual pleas for money when he saw a prosperous-looking businessman coming down the street. He approached the man and said “Look, I don’t want to try to give you a snow job. I need a drink. Will you buy me one?” The businessman, who was an admirer of truth and candor wherever he met it, decided to respond positively to this forthright approach. He said, “Come on in to this bar, and I’ll have a drink with you.” As he came up to the bar the businessman said, “Bartender, two rye whiskeys.” And the bum immediately added, “Make mine the same.” This may illustrate the truth “You have not, because you ask not.” Maybe.
