‘ve enjoyed reading a book entitled Corporate Messiah: The Hiring and Firing of Million- Dollar Managers by Patricia O’Toole (Signet, 1984, page 208). It tells the story behind the story of such high-priced executives as Roy Ash of AM International, Archie McCardell of International Harvester and Lee Iacocca of Ford and Chrysler as well as several others. It makes the observation that when these high-paid leaders are brought in from the outside they must fight a battle with the entrenched leadership that is already dug into the company. O’Toole points out a parallel problem within the nursery school: “In a famous experiment with nursery-school children, psychologist F. T. Merei organized relatively passive children into play groups and let them play for several days with the same toys and games.
