Do you think of yourself as a conservative or a radical, right-winger or left-winger? Some of you may reject the right-wing/conservative label on the grounds that persons on the “Right” seem to be hard-hearted, concerned only with the welfare of the “haves” and indifferent to the problems and sufferings of the “have-nots.” Others may reject the left-wing/radical label on the grounds that persons on the “Left” seem to be soft-headed-pipe-dreamers, whose excessive zeal for the plight of non-achievers threatens the security of those who “have it made.” It might be safe to say that, if pinned down to identifying with a label, the majority of you would prefer something like “moderate” or “middle-of-the-road.” Today, in all candor, I want to tell you exactly where I stand in this matter: I am a radical because I am a conservative. Does this sound confusing? Then listen carefully to the message of the Advent Season.
