It was Sunday evening. Jesus’ closest disciples were hiding in an upper room, behind locked doors. They were grim, dejected, fearful. Nothing had changed since the Good Friday debacle. There had been for them that terrible “morning after,” and then another. Now it was the second evening after and still they were suffering the most intense emotional “downer” of their lives. Jesus never promised them a rose garden. On the contrary, He had promised hard days ahead.

No one was closer to Jesus than Mary, of course. Think of the “downers” she must have experienced as the result of her relationship with Jesus. Imagine the Christmas “morning after” Mary experienced after the Wise Men and the shepherds had taken leave of the stable and the initial excitement of the birth had past. She had been through nine months of expectation; she had endured the long, difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem; she had delivered her Baby in a stable. Now, it is the morning…
